\n A reading by Nuyorican Women Writers<\/span><\/h2>\n

What is a Nuyorican? Are any of them women? This reading discusses what it means to be a woman in the Nuyorican literary movement and poetry performance scene from Loisaida, El Barrio, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and beyond by featuring the work of four prominent, intergenerational New York City-based poets at different stages of their careers. With their defiant and oftentimes nostalgic expressions in English, Spanish, and Spanglish, these mujeres have secured their spot in Nuyorican history.<\/p>\n

Moderator:
\nPeggy Robles-Alvarado is a 2014 BRIO performance poet award winner, CantoMundo Fellow, and a two time International Latino Book Award winner and author ofConversations with My Skin and Homenaje A Las Guerreras\/Homage to the Warrior Women. She is a planning committee member for the Bronx Book Fair.<\/p>\n

Maria Rodriguez-Morales is a poet, writer, and curator. She is the author of Brooklyn\u2019s Daughter. Maria was recognized by the Academy of American Poets in spring 2015. She is a cowriter, coproducer, and cast member of Soledad Speaks, a theatrical spoken word play.<\/p>\n

Nancy Mercado is the editor of the Nuyorican Women Writers anthology. A guest curator for the Museum of American Poetics and assistant editor for Eco-poetry.org, she authored It Concerns the Madness and edited the youth anthology If the World Were Mine. Mercado’s work is extensively anthologized.<\/p>\n

Vanessa Chica Ferreira is a New York City writer and performance poet. She began sharing her poetry in the summer of 2013. Her work appears in the anthologies, No Apologies, Full Circle, and Letras & Nuyorican Women Writers Vol 2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
